Civil Engineers are in the forefront of technology. They are the leading users of sophisticated high-tech products - applying the very latest concepts in computer-aided design, construction, project scheduling, and cost control. Civil engineering is about community service, development, and improvement. It involves the conception, planning, analysis, design and construction of facilities essential to modern life, ranging from tunnels to offshore structures to space satellites. Civil engineers are problem solvers, meeting the challenges of pollution, traffic congestion, drinking water, energy needs, urban redevelopment, and community planning.
Students taking the Civil Engineering Specialty within the Engineering Division represent one of the largest undergraduate groups at CSM with about 70 students receiving B.S degrees in 2006-2007. The Civil Engineering Specialty builds on a foundation of multidisciplinary engineering core courses to prepare students for leadership roles in industry and academe. The employment prospects for Civil Specialty graduates are excellent. The most recent data from the CSM Careers office for 2006-2007 indicates that the percentage of Civil Specialty students with placements at graduation is in the high 90's. This includes over 20% who go on to graduate school at CSM or elsewhere. Those that go into Industry have seen salaries increase significantly over the past 12 months with starting salary offers averaging well over $50K.

Shell Eco-Marathon Challenge
The Shell Oil Company sponsors a national vehicle design competition among teams of college and high school students that takes place each year in Fontana, California. The Shell Eco-marathon Challenge pits vehicles against each other to see which one can go the furthest on a gallon of gas. This is the first year that a team from the Colorado School of Mines has competed in this competition. We are especially grateful for a special $6,000 grant from Shell to use in building our vehicle. Despite this being our first year in the competition, our vehicle managed a very respectable 679.4 miles per gallon, which was good for a 9th place finish overall, but first place among the 1st year teams! The team members included: A.J. Tupper (Team Leader), Jack Bell, Angeline Blum, Gavin Custodio, William Everson, Nick Macon, Peter Schmidt, and Tanner Stamey. Their Team Faculty Advisor was Dr. Richard Passamaneck.
