Focus Area: Power Electronics and Energy Systems

The "Energy Systems and Power Electronics" group at Colorado School of Mines (CSM) pursues both fundamental and applied research in the interrelated fields of conventional electric power/energy systems and machinery, renewable energy resources, distributed power generation, energy economics and policy, power electronics and power quality.

The thrust of the graduate program and research efforts are designed for all aspects of electric power, power electronics and energy related industries. This is coordinated with the activities of the Power Systems Engineering Research Center (www.pserc.org) at CSM and other affiliated universities. Current research activities include renewable energy and energy policy, advances in substation engineering, power quality, insulation life assessment, electrical safety and arc flash hazard, variable frequency drives, intelligent neuro-fuzzy drives, micro-grid and high frequency AC power systems, fuel-cell and distributed generation interconnection and application problems in power systems along with restructuring, deregulation and policy issues. The projects are sponsored by a broad spectrum of electrical energy organizations including IEEE/NFPA, investor-owned utilities, rural electric associations, manufacturing, government & regulatory agencies, consulting engineering firmse, and national labs.
