Marte Gutierrez is the James R. Paden Distinguished Professor of Civil Engineering. His main research interest is in the development and application of advanced computational models and information technologies for geotechnical applications.

Marte Gutierrez is the James R. Paden Distinguished Professor of Engineering in the Division of Engineering at the Colorado School of Mines. He received the Ph.D. degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Tokyo. He was a Post-doctoral Fellow (1989-1991), Senior Engineer (1991-2000) and Group Leader (1997-2000) at the Norwegian Geotechnical Institute (NGI). He moved to the US in 2000 and was Associate Professor and Professor at Virginia Tech until 2007. He joined the Colorado School of Mines in 2008. He was a Senior Visiting Scholar (1998) at the National Institute for Resources and Environment (NIRE) in Japan, and a Visiting Professor (2007) at the Ecole Nationale des Ponts et Chaussees (ENPC) in Paris, France.

Dr. Gutierrez has more than 25 years of professional practice and has been involved with several large geotechnical projects. Notable projects include: 1) Foundation analysis and design of several major offshore platforms, 2) Subsidence analysis of hydrocarbon fields, and 3) Analysis and design of major tunnels.

His current research interests are: 1) Computational geomechanics, 2) Information and sensor technologies for geoengineering, 3) Underground excavations in rocks, 4) Geohazards and geotechnical earthquake engineering, 5) Petroleum Geomechanics and 6) Nano-geomechanics. Dr. Gutierrez's major research contributions include the development of: 1) novel constitutive models for granular soils and soft rocks, 2) coupled HTM (hydro-thermo-mechanical) models for non-isothermal and multiphase fluid flow in deformable porous and fractured media, 3) nano to macro multiscale models for geomaterials, and 4) techniques for adaptive real-time geologic mapping, analysis and design of underground space.
